Mönster kan anges som vanliga uttryck:

/regular expression/ {action}

Till exempel:

echo "[email protected]
not an email" | awk '/[^@]+@.+/ {print}'

producerar:

[email protected]

Observera att en åtgärd som endast består av print kan utelämnas helt. Exemplet ovan motsvarar:

echo "[email protected]
not an email" | awk '/[^@]+@.+/'
